# Using the Browser Extension

> How to use the Porcia browser extension effectively

# Using the Browser Extension

Once installed, the Porcia browser extension automatically detects logins to SaaS applications in the background. This guide covers how to use the extension effectively and manage your privacy settings.

## Extension Overview

The Porcia extension appears as an icon in your browser toolbar:

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Automatic Detection" icon="chart-line">
    Detects logins to business applications automatically
  </Card>

  <Card title="Privacy Controls" icon="shield">
    Pause detection, exclude domains, and control what's detected
  </Card>

  <Card title="Usage Insights" icon="eye">
    View your personal usage statistics in the extension popup
  </Card>

  <Card title="Sync Status" icon="sync">
    See sync status and last update time
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

## Daily Usage

### Automatic Detection

The extension works automatically in the background:

1. **Log into a SaaS application** (e.g., slack.com, salesforce.com)
2. **Extension detects** the login event (form submission, OAuth click, or SSO redirect)
3. **Event is queued** locally for batch sync
4. **Data syncs** to Porcia every 5 minutes
5. **View insights** in your Porcia dashboard

<Info>
  The extension detects login events, not page visits. Consumer domains like google.com, youtube.com, and reddit.com are automatically excluded.
</Info>

### Viewing Your Usage

## Understanding Usage Data

### What Gets Detected

**Login Event Information:**

* Domain name (e.g., "slack.com")
* Detection method (login\_form, oauth\_google, oauth\_microsoft, saml\_sso, url\_pattern)
* Whether a work email was used (boolean only)
* Timestamp of the login event

**Usage Patterns:**

* Login frequency per domain
* Time of day of login events

### What Doesn't Get Tracked

**Never Tracked:**

* ❌ Page URLs or paths
* ❌ Page content or text
* ❌ Form inputs or passwords
* ❌ Keystrokes or mouse movements
* ❌ Personal browsing
* ❌ Consumer domains (google.com, youtube.com, reddit.com, etc.)

<Warning>
  The extension only detects login events and authentication activity. No sensitive information like passwords, form data, or page content is ever captured.
</Warning>
